2007 Sonoma County Zinfandel

When it comes to California wine heritage, Sonoma County is tough to match. We are honored to be part of Sonoma wine history (see The family) along with dozens of multi-generational Sonoma County winemaking families. No other California wine-growing region has more geologically distinct soil types – greater than in all of France. And at over one million acres (60,000+ planted) there is enough land to generate a range of weather conditions. Here soil and weather marry to enable almost any grape variety to prosper and flourish. With cool marine influenced weather the coastal regions produce world class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Inland, as the heat increases, many red varieties including Zinfandel produce wines of great character, depth and fruit complexity.

The diversity found within the sub-regions of the county creates flavor profiles that define the subtle boundaries of Zinfandel. The grape is grown in Alexander Valley, Chalk Hill, Dry Creek Valley, Knights Valley, Russian River Valley, Sonoma Coast and Sonoma Valley. These sub-appellations combine to enable a spice rack strategy that we draw on to produce our Sonoma County Zinfandel.

Embarrassingly, over the years Zinfandel has been transformed into almost every imaginable style and color of wine imaginable. We salute the Sonoma County Zinfandel growers who have raised the bar on Zinfandel grape quality over the recent years. This has resulted in establishing Zinfandel as worthy of serious sensory evaluation comparison to Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and other noble red varieties.
